Engineering Technology Students Build a High Tech Version of the Lewis & Clark
Canoe
Engineering
Technology students Justin Belt, Adam Bridges, Joshua Caudill, Edwin Ellis, William
Extine, Jason Ferrell, Derrick Gaddis, James Henderson, Perry Bell, Travis Little,
Torrey Miller, Holly Neuman, Chris Parris, Robbie Shapiro, Cody Smith, JT Snelling,
and Eddie Vick from MET 141 (Engineering Materials) are shown here applying a
Kevlar, graphite, fiberglass, and epoxy composite mixture to a pirogue canoe.
This style canoe is the same type the Lewis and Clark expedition used 200 years
ago. The canoe was constructed using stressed frameless construction with bonded
thermoplastic chines, thermoplastic gunnels, and a wood core. The canoe is a prototype
for a canoe building course (ET 423) that is offered during the June summer school
session at Western Caroline University. The Instructor for that course is Bob
Dalley, a Professor at Western Carolina University. A kayak Dalley recently built
is featured in the current issue of Epoxyworks Magazine.
